Cameroonian Timber Imports Rebound Significantly, Demand for West African Tropical Timber Processing Surges

China's timber imports from Cameroon in April 2026 saw an unexpected rebound, with West African tropical timber supply returning to a growth trajectory. Imports of high-end sawn timber such as sapele increased exponentially, leading to a continued expansion of raw material supply for domestic plywood and furniture panel manufacturers. As a professional manufacturer of veneer dryers, Shine Machinery has deep expertise in African tropical hardwood drying processes. Its customized roller drying production lines are adapted for rotary-cut veneer processing of African logs, leveraging intelligent and energy-saving drying technology to capitalize on the increased demand from imported timber processing.

According to the latest customs statistics, my country's timber imports from Cameroon experienced a strong recovery in April 2026, completely reversing the previous months' low levels. The total monthly timber imports reached 42,000 cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of 41.9%, corresponding to an import value of US$13.62 million, a year-on-year increase of 60.4%, clearly signaling a comprehensive recovery in domestic demand for West African tropical timber.

In terms of import category structure, tropical logs remain the core support for imports. Cameroon imported 35,000 cubic meters of tropical logs in April, a year-on-year increase of 33.7%, accounting for over 80% of the total imports for the month. Tropical sawn timber, which had previously been sluggish, achieved a breakthrough growth, with monthly imports reaching 4,400 cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of over 200%. Sapele sawn timber, a high-end furniture material, performed particularly well, with imports surging threefold year-on-year to 2,800 cubic meters, becoming a key raw material category for panel processing companies.

Prices showed a divergent trend of "year-on-year increase, month-on-month decrease": the average import price of Cameroonian timber in April increased by 13% year-on-year, but decreased by 10.7% month-on-month compared to March. Industry analysis points out that the timber industry was at a cyclical trough in the same period last year, and the low price base pushed up the year-on-year increase; the shortage of overseas supplies in March raised short-term prices, while the large-scale arrival of timber in April led to a supply-demand balance adjustment and a month-on-month price decline. Significant differences exist among different product categories. The average price of logs increased by 5% year-on-year, while the average price of ordinary sawn timber decreased by 10.9%. Only the average price of high-end sapele sawn timber bucked the trend, rising by 14.6%, highlighting its market scarcity.

Looking at the overall African timber import market, China's total imports of African timber in April reached 201,000 cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of 17.6%. Cameroon's 41.9% import growth rate significantly outpaced the industry average, ranking only behind Congo (Brazzaville) and Central African Republic, making it the country with the strongest rebound in timber imports in West Africa. The import volume of tropical hardwoods from West Africa is expected to continue to expand.

The continued increase in raw material imports directly drives the expansion of production capacity in domestic veneer and plywood processing enterprises. However, the processing challenges of tropical hardwoods—high moisture content, high wood density, and susceptibility to cracking and deformation—place higher technical requirements on veneer drying equipment. As a leading manufacturer specializing in the research and development of veneer drying equipment, our company has developed and customized multi-specification roller veneer dryers specifically for the characteristics of tropical woods such as Cameroonian sapele and African logs, perfectly suited to the drying needs of rotary-cut veneers from imported West African timber.

Shine Machinery's veneer dryers are equipped with a self-developed fifth-generation intelligent temperature control system with a temperature control accuracy of ±0.5℃. They feature a built-in drying curve specifically for tropical hardwoods, automatically adjusting hot air speed and drying time for high-density veneers, ensuring even moisture removal and effectively solving problems such as warping, cracking, and color difference in tropical veneer drying. The veneer yield is consistently above 98%, meeting the quality standards for high-end furniture board production.

Energy-saving and consumption-reducing, adapting to the cost needs of processing enterprises

The equipment is equipped with a biomass combustion heating system, which can utilize sawdust and veneer scraps generated from wood processing as fuel on-site, reducing fuel costs by 60%; multi-stage hot air circulation + waste heat recovery structure, increasing heat energy utilization rate by 40%; variable frequency control of the whole machine, reducing overall energy consumption by 30% compared with traditional drying equipment. Facing the current fluctuations in timber prices, it significantly reduces the overall cost of veneer processing and increases enterprise profit margins.

Fully automated large-scale production adaptable to increased raw material demand

Multiple models of drying production lines are available, including double-layer, four-layer, and six-layer lines. Automated feeding, continuous drying, and automatic discharge are integrated. Only 2-3 people are needed per line, allowing for 24/7 uninterrupted operation, overcoming the limitations of natural drying due to weather conditions. In response to the recent increase in imports of Cameroonian logs and Sapele sawn timber, we can quickly match the needs of panel processing plants for capacity expansion and new production lines. We also support complete line delivery to African timber factories, with numerous successful implementation cases in producing regions such as South Africa, Tanzania, and Côte d'Ivoire.

Large-scale fully automated veneer drying workshop: Wide-width universal design adaptable to various types of African timber. The wide feed width covers veneer thicknesses from 0.8mm to 8mm, ensuring stable processing of both Cameroonian logs for rotary-cut basic veneer and high-end decorative veneers. The equipment's strong versatility helps processing plants handle multiple types of imported timber raw materials in a one-stop manner.

With the long-term positive trend in timber imports from Cameroon and other West African countries, the domestic panel processing industry will usher in a new round of capacity expansion. The demand for phasing out outdated and inefficient drying equipment and upgrading to intelligent production lines will continue to grow. Our veneer dryers combine three core advantages: high efficiency, energy saving, and high-quality processing. They precisely address the pain points of the West African tropical timber processing market. Leveraging our mature domestic projects and overseas export service experience, we provide complete veneer drying solutions for domestic and international panel manufacturers. We seize the industrial development opportunities brought about by the growth of African timber imports and help the timber processing industry upgrade to a green and intelligent level.
